چکیده

In order to examine the Earth’s magnetic intensity and inclination during homing migration of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) and to present tracking data consistent with the geomagnetic imprinting hypothesis that salmon migrate homeward using the Earth’s magnetic intensity or inclination, archival tagging operations were carried out in the Bering Sea in 2012 and 2013. DST magnetic tags were attached to the bodies of chum salmon on board a research ship. The tags recorded temperature, depth, magnetic intensity and inclination, compass heading, and tilt of the fi sh. Two tagged chum salmon were subsequently recovered near the coast of Hokkaido, Japan, in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The estimated homing route of the 2012 fi sh was linear from the release site to the coast of Hokkaido, Japan. The 2013 fi sh reached the coast of Hokkaido by way of the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia. These estimated homing routes were not consistent with the great circle route. The estimated homing migration routes were consistent with the isoline of magnetic intensity rather than magnetic inclination. For the tag recovered in 2012, the homing migration route was approximately along the isoline of magnetic intensity at the recovery site. Therefore, we conclude that this study supports the geomagnetic imprinting hypothesis that magnetic intensity plays an important role in the homing migration of chum salmon in

Swimming speeds and buoyancy compensation of migrating adult chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta revealed by speed/depth/acceleration data logger.

Although the homing migration of Pacific salmon is well documented, the swimming behaviour of the returning salmon has been poorly described, principally as a result of the difficulties encountered in monitoring salmon behaviour in the sea. The present study describes the use of a recently developed electronic data logger to obtain simultaneous recordings of the swimming speed, depth, fin-beati...

The Olfactory Transcriptome and Progression of Sexual Maturation in Homing Chum Salmon Oncorhynchus keta

Reproductive homing migration of salmonids requires accurate interaction between the reception of external olfactory cues for navigation to the spawning grounds and the regulation of sexual maturation processes. This study aimed at providing insights into the hypothesized functional link between olfactory sensing of the spawning ground and final sexual maturation. We have therefore assessed the...

Determination of population structure and stock composition of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) in Russia determined with microsatellites

In Asia, there are two distinct types of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta Walbaum). The early-maturing or “summer” chum salmon generally returns to spawn from June through August in streams bordering Kamchatka, the Sea of Okhotsk, the east coast of Sakhalin Island, and the Amur River. Later-maturing or “autumn” chum salmon generally return to spawn from September through November in streams in Ja...

Behavioural thermoregulation of chum salmon during homing migration in coastal waters.

Homing Pacific salmon are suggested to utilise directional cues in shallow water while migrating in coastal waters. Since salmonids are typical cold-water fish, they may have to cope with warm surface water while gathering directional information. We studied behavioural thermoregulation of 31 free-ranging chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta using micro data loggers off the Sanriku coast from early Oc...

Reproduction of Short-Term Vertical Movements Observed Using Archival Tags on Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) by a Simple Model

Vertical movement patterns of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) during their homing migration were examined using archival tags. Vertical movements through the thermocline with a periodicity of less than 1 h were observed during the day in the North Pacific. To examine the dynamics of these short-term vertical movements, we developed a simple one-dimensional vertical movement model. It is assumed...
